Material markup for clients... what percentage are you adding

Hi everyone
Curious what others are charging. I currently add 15% on top of supplier pricing for materials I procure on behalf of clients. A colleague told me she charges 20–25% and some people have told me that's normal. Is there an industry standard or does it vary by project type and by material? I'm more in small-scale commercial fit-out.

Hi, that's an interesting question. But I feel impossible to answer without more context... all depends on the project and budget. Sometimes we even not put any percentage if we need the work :)

15% is too low for the work involved in procurement. I charge 20% as standard, written into the contract. High-end clients sometimes negotiate to 18% but I rarely go below that. Hope that helps you.
