They want me to do a full concept before hiring me?? Is this okay

Had an interview with a design firm and they asked me to prepare a full concept for a project before they decide if they want to hire me. Is this normal now? Feels a bit strange to give away hours of work for an interview. What do others think, should I do it? I really want the job (badly) but don't want to be fooled into doing work for free.

Any advice, please help

Hey, absolutely you should not do it. Respond professionally and explain that you don't have the time available on your hands to do a proper concept. And that you prefer to do so once hired. Offer to come in again and discuss your skills, portfolio and even bounce some design ideas for a current project they have. But don't take any work home for free. Been there many times, I know its hard. Good luck to you!!
